Where Does "Kill At Will" Go From Here?

Since all the so-called “Stand Your Ground” gun laws have been sweeping the nation and since there have been an almost tripling of gun incidents since all this began, I began to wonder what is causing the “Gun Revolution” in Modern Day America?

I talked to a lot of people, both Conservative and Democrat, to try to determine why America seems to be on this “Binge” about firearms and why some people seem to be so quick to take full advantage of what I term “Kill At Will” laws to find reasons to act in “Self Defense” and use lethal force.

While pondering these things in my heart, the question occurred to me, “Can these laws be manipulated in such a fashion that a person can get away with persuing someone and shooting them and then claiming self defense– and never be arrested or spend jail time or pay a fine or any of that stuff?

The answers I got shocked me sometimes but then I stopped to remember who it was that was answering my questions.  Many of those I asked were ordinary working  people with low paying menial jobs–kind of representative of what I have often called lower income wage earners (The Working Poor?).

I also found that the most vocal advocates for rights to own guns that I talked to also claimed, for the most part, to be “God-Fearing,” hard-working, honest, Christian and…Conservative.

Some of the statements they made about their guns were interesting and I personally found some of them to be kind of on the “Nut” fringe. (My opinion)

This one dude that I talked to took a deep draw on the beer he was drinking and stared at me with glassy eyes while he explained how Jesus had actually died so that we could have guns. He also took a deep breath and added, “And, of course–for our sins.”

This individual referred to The Second Amendment of The Constitution as “The Jesus Amendment.”

I talked to another man who was mowing his lawn.

He identified himself as a Conservative too.

This one asked me a question in answer to the one I had asked him about why people are so infatuated with gun ownership and the new “Stand Your Ground Laws.”

His answer tended along the lines of, “Hey! There are all kinds of nut cases out there running around with guns.  I need my guns to protect myself and my family in case one of them gets to feeling too froggy!”

I thought to myself, “I wonder what the limits might be that define “Too Froggy?”

Some of the people I talked to about this problem seemed to think they needed a personal armory to protect themselves from what they considered to be an ever more corrupt government. (I don’t know how that is supposed to work out.)

The kid next door to me was quick to say, “Yeah! I got my guns and on the day when some government agent comes around to try and take them away from me…”

He apparently thought he had said too much because he simply walked away without saying another word.

There were quite a few guys that I talked to who seemed to actually believe that Guns and Jesus are inseparable in their value—they let me know that you can’t really have a relationship with Jesus without a gun and you really can’t have  a gun if you don’t have the Jesus relationship going for yourself.

I am still working on figuring that one out.

I met this old man who informed me, “Yeah, I carry a firearm and I have the license for it too.”

He informed me that his Bible told him that a man can’t be a real American or a real Christian without a gun.

He also informed me that his Bible told him that a real Christian cannot live in the same house with “Seven nasty old cats.”

I am getting the idea by talking to all these people that a lot of them are operating from some kind of paranoia and that the paranoia seems to be fueled by both a really deep insecurity and this, in turn, works out to a lot of pent-up hate.

I guess the day has returned when the gun has become the “Equalizer” and the “Tranquilizer” once more like in the Old West.

My real fear is that a lot of the guns and the permits to carry them will end up in the hands of people with short emotional fuses and that a lot of carnage is possible if fuses are lit and tempers flare.

Is this a phase that America is going through or are people actually arming themselves for some kind of tragic confrontation with the forces of reality?

Only time will tell and I hope that not too many people get hurt in the various frays that are bound to erupt as the laws get more and more relaxed about guns, their ownership and the definitions of when it is legal to actually use them.

The one thing that I personally hope someone with some kind of authority does is to re-define “Self Defense” so that a line may be drawn in the courts between what is legally considered to be actually protecting one’s property or life and what is murder.

This gun thing gets scarier with each passing day in my opinion.
