How About That War In Afghanistan, Folks?

I guess I am allowed to have opinions about things and, as I recall, there is Freedom of Speech here in the good old U.S.A., so I want to talk about the war in Afghanistan in this blog post.

When I turned on my radio this morning, one of the first things I heard was news that there had been a shooting tragedy in Afghanistan and that there are some allegations that U.S. Service People might be involved.

Well, I was shocked by the news and saddened but I also heard someone on the radio say that some U.S. Officials may be warning that there could be some “Reprisals” because of the alleged incident(s).

The word, “Reprisals” stirred something in me—a sort of anger and maybe a little frustration.  “What do they mean when they say there might be some Reprisals?”  That kind of rubbed me the wrong way folks!

As I understand things, The United States of America has been in what we have come to call “The War In Afghanistan” for just about 11 years now.  According to my best estimates that represents at least 104 months of sending our Troops and Treasure over there to try and help the cause of Freedom. (The Second World War was only about four years long.

I hear reports and read articles that suggest to me that America has lost more than 1,513 of Her finest brave young souls to that awful conflict in Afghanistan.  In my way of thinking, the loss of just one American Life is one too many in any of these kinds of wars.

Then, the question comes to my mind, “Just what is it that The United States is getting in return for Her sacrifices in Afghanistan? What is the return on our investment of Treasure, Resources and the Blood, Sweat and Tears of our precious American Military people?

I have heard some claims that our fighting in Afghanistan is what is keeping us safe here at home from terrorist attacks like the ones that happened on 9/11.  If that is anywhere near the truth, then I am one grateful puppy. But there is no way that I can know about such things.  I am not a politician and I am not a military expert. I am just a plain old American John Doe and I have to believe some of what the News and the politicians are telling me, don’t I?

I am pretty certain that someone is making a fortune on this war (As someone does on every war.) Those who manufacture bullets, bombs, guns, tanks and planes come to mind. I am assuming (Without actually knowing) that the so-called “War Industries” are “Cleaning Up” financially on this one.  And then, there are all those mysterious entities spread throughout that beleagured country known as “Contractors.”  I am sure “Contractors” do not work for nothing either.  What about that?

Well, America might be getting something back for what we are putting into the effort over there but I simply have little or no idea what that might be.  If anyone reading this blog knows something that might help me understand the situation a little better, I am open to listening and maybe learning.  I do not know everything, after all– unlike some of my Conservative friends.

In The United States I guess when someone commits a crime, we do not go on a “Reprisal” spree.  That smacks of the old “Eye For An Eye and Tooth For a Tooth” garbagio from the Old Testament.  I think that as a “Civilized” nation, we have gotten past all that “Revenge and Reprisal’ BS, don’t you?

I guess what I am saying is that after all The United States has done to try and promote the cause of Freedom for both Afghanistan and The United States, I think I deserve to hear something a little different than “U.S. Officials Warning Of Possible Reprisals” because of the alleged actions of a few.

How about something more on the order of “Afghan Officials Pledge Support In Investigations?”  Something more on that order would sound a lot better to me than “Possible Reprisals.”

Whenever I hear talk of possible “Reprisals” in situations like this, I start to wonder if we haven’t already expended more than enough of our resources in this seemingly endless situation over there.  But then, that is me, folks! That is the way I think. I don’t expect everybody to see things my way— most of the time, anyways.

I am an American Man, 72-years-old, and a Veteran of The U.S. Military. I have served honorably in both The United States Army (National Guard) and The United States Air Force for a total of seven years and three months active duty during what is now known as The Vietnam Era. I am a concerned citizen and refer to myself as "A Crazy Left Wing Liberal Nut Case with occasional Right Wing Conservative tendencies. I am particularly concerned and grieved about the way our beloved America seems to have become so politically divided over the past few years to the point where hardly anyone seems to be able to get along or to work together and where mutual vilification seems to be a spectator sport of some kind. I am particular fearful that we might get to the point, in our internal power struggles where we would be a One Party Nation. That, in my opinion, would be a total disaster and that is what I fear certain members of the element generally known as The "Christian" Conservative Right may have in mind.
