Some people see a need to draw a contrast between President Obama and some of the other contenders for the office of The Presidency.
In my opinion, the contrast has already been drawn—the contrast between level-headed experienced leadership that has already begun, in spite of all the obstructionism and intransigence of the opposition to bring America out of the doldrums of the Recession and another who, according to some, seems to be advocating a return to the failed policies of the most previous Conservative Administration.
As I see it, that should be enough “Contrast” for any thinking American who really cares about his or her country.
There is plenty of concern being generated by the Right Wing Extreme propaganda machine right now about what a tragedy it would be if the current administration were re-elected, but there is very little attention being given to what would be the absolutely disastrous result of a return to the era of Trickle Down Economics and the recklessness of the most previous Conservative administration—an administration that has been described as the most secretive and most oppressive in American History.
There is a fallacy rampant among some on the Right Fringe that declares that a country the size of The United States can operate effectively, safely and competitively in the modern world without spending money. This mind set seems to believe that the less the government spends, the more efficient and secure it will be. In my mind, this is a really irresponsible political view and one that has never worked historically.
The challenges of the great depression of the 20s and 30s as well as the Great War of the 40s demanded enormous government investment in public works and government programs to recover the national equilibrium from these events and this recovery could never have had a chance in Perdition to happen if it were attempted according to some of the crazy fiscal theories being advanced by some of The Righties today— never would have happened! It took government spending and it took government spending on a massive and historic scale. It may not have been popular but it was done and it worked! It saved America!
There are some unknowing nut cases today who are fond of recalling the “Thrift” of such personages as Ben Franklin in advancing their arguments about why government by cut and slash is more effective that a government of investment in infrastructure and opportunity.
My answer to that train of non-thinking is, “If you want to live the kind of life that those ancestors lived—with the same deprivations and lack of conveniences—If you want to go back to that simplistic lifestyle where life was dangerous and short because science and medicine had not advanced and where industry was still more or less on the “Master and Apprentice” system…then go for it! By all means regress if regression is your thing! Go on back to those days and see how long this nation will endure in the face of modern day pressures to compete and perform on a global scale. Some of the outdated and trite old failed policies of the Extreme Right in America seem absolutely devoid of any degree of common sense sometimes—but they still push it, don’t they?
They still want to take us back to those good old days of Mom and Pop Stores and Small Town America—an era that is gone, dead and buried– they want to resurrect it much to the potential peril of us all and they have created an entire smoke screen of propaganda to try and convince America that is the way to go.
There are many on the Far Right Extremes who love to talk about how corrupt our elected officials have become and how arrogant and uncaring the people that were duly elected by Democratic Process to represent us all have become but none of them ever seems to get around to mentioning how arrogant and presumptive (And totally ignorant of facts) that some of those who follow the ways of that ill-advised new “Patriotism” can be. That new Nationalistic Bombastic Faux Patriotism that advocates the path of “No Negotiation, No Compromise!”
There is nothing responsible about bringing attention to supposed corruption in high places in America when everyone who knows anything at all realizes that such talk is usually someone’s made up excuse to use the traditional elective process to “Overthrow” the legitimate government of the United States and to invoke the Constitution in their really transparent scheme to replace the elective Democratic Republic with what I believe will be some kind of Biblically-driven Theocratic nightmare under Dominionist control.
In my younger days, some of this talk about “Revolution” would have been considered seditious. When I was a kid, any talk about “Overthrowing” the established government by force of arms was a legally punishable offense. Today, some of those who seem to advocate in that direction cloak their actions in the language of The First Amendment. But that cuts no ice with me. A lot of these agitators are In my opinion) Anarchists plain and simple and nothing more—disguising themselves in the pantaloons and tri corn hats of Patriots—they aren’t fooling too many people except themselves perhaps.
I am banking on the innate decency and goodness of the American People to finally recognize the dark path that modern Radical Conservatism is trying to take them down and to see America say “No! No! Heck No! You are not going to do this to me, my country and my generations!”
I believe America has always favored a Liberal approach to government and I believe, regardless of all the noise and smoke being put out by the Radicals, America will return to that tradition when the chips are down and the votes are counted—if we can get enough votes past the Radical Right‘s voter suppression techniques, that is.
