Views on Party Politics

I have come to realize that I cannot continue with this blog until I have openly explained my personal views regarding this government, my party affiliation or lack thereof and my heartfelt beliefs concerning what I believe is good for our country.

I have voted all over the political spectrum based completely on whom I believe is best for the position they are running for. I have never voted based on party affiliation and I feel there is a majority in this country that think as I do. I also believe we need a third party that truly represents the people. The Democrats support big government and the Republicans support big business, where is the party that supports the people?

I could be wrong but in my opinion there is a silent majority who think as I do. Stated briefly, I am a liberal centrist (slightly left of dead center) based on the World’s Smallest Political Quiz because I feel there are never any straight-up “yes” or “no” answers to anything (except taking rights away regarding the bearing of arms and free speech). In taking the quiz I realized I could not completely 100% agree on any of the questions. There are always some instances when a certain amount of government involvement is necessary.

My definition of a centrist: A centrists is one who favors the “middle ground” regarding government control of the economy and personal behavior. Depending on the issue, they sometimes favor government intervention and sometimes support individual freedom of choice. Centrists pride themselves on keeping an open mind, tend to oppose “political extremes,” and emphasize what they describe as “practical” solutions to problems.

To be honest, I voted for John McCain in that last presidential election and in hindsight I am so glad he did not win. The last thing we need in this government are more party line politicians doing what is best for their party at the expense of the people. We would have been faced with another four years of partisan battles with a republican president facing a democratic senate and congress, and the thought of Sarah Palin as my vice president, one step away from the presidency, scares me half to death.

Not because she is a woman but because some little spot in my heart told me she does not have what it takes to be a true leader. She is an intelligent and likeable person who speaks well and looks great but just the fact that she quit her position as governor because the going got tough makes me wonder and because I have to wonder makes her unfit in my eyes. I do not want to have to wonder if someone is up to the job with any candidate I choose.

What I look for in a candidate is statesmanship. Someone who conveys a quality of leadership that brings people together in the spirit of caring for others and for the country as a whole. The last thing I look for in a candidate is a politician. “A statesman does what he believes is best for his country, a politician does what best gets him re-elected, a quote from Mikhail Gorbachev, imagine that.

I believe Obama is a statesman, a person who truly cares for the nation as a whole and does his best to govern from the middle. Republicans have shown their true colors over the past many months especially since Republican Sen. Jim DeMint stated, “If we are able to stop Obama on health care reform, it will be his Waterloo. Their attempt to block everything on the presidents agenda simply for party reasons infuriates me and gives me great cause to focus my anger at the election booth this November on anyone who participated in such actions.

In my own daily dealings with many of my friends and acquaintances I have noticed those most set against Obamas agenda, and Obama in general, are the same people that so quickly refer to him using the n word. They argue using political sound bites and misinformation so readily as if they have no real thoughts of their own. If you listen closely you recognize the underlying bigotry and hatred in their voice and what they say. Obama could bring peace and prosperity to the world tomorrow and it would not change any of their minds.

In closing I will say this, America needs to wake up and grow up. There is no place for bigotry or partisan politics in this complicated and fast moving world we live in today. It is time to weed out those that obstruct good policy for party reasons and elect true statesmen that care about this country as a whole. If I had my way I would do away with all of the dyed-in-the-wool politicians and fill their vacancies with true one-term statesmen or stateswomen whose only agenda is to make this country better. We need a new system that offers real choices for government leadership and not be forced to choose only between candidates that these parties force upon us.

I hope this explanation of my views invites discussion. Forgive my errors, I am not a writer, I am an ordinary citizen expressing my own personal views and I challenge you to do the same. I encourage anyone reading this to join in, become a contributor to this blog and speak up about how you feel.
