The Dept of Interior is also the agency responsible for maintaining relations with Native Americans through the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Many of these mountain tops may contain sacred sites, yet are not being adequately assessed archeologically prior to total destruction. There is even the possibility that European visitors also left traces on these mountains long before Columbus was born. The losses extend well beyond the natural beauty and pristine bounty of these lands.

It is interesting that you refer to Carthage and Rome in an historical context in the latter part of your article, because the first thing I thought when I read:

was “What about the archaeological record?” Once this record has been destroyed there is no way to recover it. Perhaps we can add that to the list of charges against those responsible.
